Providence East Side Association of Cooperative Housing

Intentional Community & Affordable Housing

ABOUT US

Watermyn and Finlandia are the houses of PEACH (Providence East Association of Cooperative Housing) formerly known as BACH (Brown Association for Cooperative Housing)

For the past 45 years, BACH/PEACH has existed as an effort in intentional community and affordable housing on the east side of Providence. We believe that people can get more out of their lives by working together and helping each other than by staying alone. PEACH is not a place for those who are just looking for a cheap place to live and eat. We want people who believe in cooperation and mutual support; people who wash dishes, cook, clean, jam together, or quiet down, and sometimes put themselves second so that everyone can live and get along better. Our co-ops are places to study, to meet people, to party, to sleep, to begin friendships, to fall in love, to learn from others, and to learn about yourself. LGBTQ friendly

Our residents include local workers & artists, Students from Brown, RISD, JWU, CCRI, URI, and several chickens.

PEACH is currently made up of two houses totaling about 30 people, and is owned and supported by NASCO, a national housing cooperative organization.

About

North American Students of Cooperation (NASCO)

The North American Students of Cooperation (NASCO) Family [of associations] organizes and educates affordable group equity co-ops and their members for the purpose of promoting a community oriented cooperative movement.

Since 1968, NASCO and its affiliates have been working with students, worker-owners, activists, and community members who are interested in applying cooperative principles to meet their needs and fulfill their various missions. NASCO provides education and technical assistance to its members and co-op organizing groups, assists its members in communicating with each other, acts to educate the public on cooperative principles and practices, and promotes the co-op movement as a whole.

NASCO acts to link group equity cooperatives, primarily but not solely in the housing sector, and sees as its most important goal the improvement of operations through mutual aid and support. NASCO provides numerous opportunities for member co-ops to improve their operations through learning from other cooperatives. These linking opportunities include the Cooperative Education and Training Institute (NASCO Institute), the Staff and Managers Conference, Anti-Oppression Education, the NASCO Directory of Members, the NASCO website, and the NASCO Cooperative Internship Network. NASCO also provides direct services through on-site workshops, consulting contracts, organizational and financial advice, co-op development, compiling information on tax exemption, and other activities.
